CASS+ works with court ushers
CASS+ works closely with the court ushers inside the Magistrates’ and Family Courts in Exeter, Newton Abbot, Plymouth, Bodmin and Truro. This is because the ushers know that we can help people experiencing the Justice System.
Court ushers, security, social workers, probation, magistrates, and judges are constantly looking out for anyone in need of practical advice and emotional support.
We caught up with an usher who has been working at Newton Abbot Magistrates’ Court for the last four years:
Thank you for talking to us today. It’s great to be working with you and all the other ushers at Newton Abbot Magistrates’ Court.
What does a court usher do day-to-day?
Priority is to keep the Legal Advisor or the Judge up to date with who is present, who represents who, and who is ready (with an indication of plea) to come into court.
Roughly, how many times a week do you send people our way?
I send people into the CASS+ office at least six times a week. It makes all the difference knowing that CASS+ is here to help.
What do you think are the issues people going through the Justice System are facing right now?
Newton Abbot can be a very busy court, which can sometimes create waiting times on the day. People can experience stress and anxiety when attending court, this can lead to frustrations, which can be challenging for the ushers to deal with. We are working hard to reduce the number of cases waiting to come to court and there are a limited number of courts, which means cases can sometimes come to court after a longer period than normal.
Can you tell us briefly about a time when you saw the difference CASS+ made for an individual?
An elderly gentleman came into court on a charge which involved over-indulgence of alcohol. He seemed confused, in ill health and dishevelled. I could see that he needed assistance with his clothing because his trousers kept falling down. I spoke to your team and they reached out to him. Several weeks later, his sister came into court and explained that he was much better and making good progress and healthier as a result of cutting down on alcohol. This is the difference CASS+ can make.
What would have happened if CASS+ had not been there?
This gentleman would most likely be in very poor health and at risk.
To summarise, why do you think we need a CASS+ inside Newton Abbot Magistrates’ Court?
The CASS+ team does a really good job. Your work is invaluable. You provide help, advice, guidance and sometimes just a listening ear.
It would be a great loss to many people going through the courts if the CASS+ team was not available.
