Kimberley has been volunteering with CASS+ at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court where she supports people going through the criminal justice system. She’s gaining valuable experience and helping others:
I was buzzing after my first day at CASS+. I could see how to combine my life experience with my legal knowledge.
Volunteering uses your time well
Kimberley started out as a teaching assistant. After going through a traumatic court case, she became fascinated by the legal system and applied for Law at the University of Plymouth. With limited support, she was determined to prove her critics wrong and make something of her life. Kimberley is really proud of achieving a BA (Hons) in Law and now she’s using her time profitably to consider her options:
Volunteering changes your perspective
Working with the CASS+ team has really changed my perspective. It’s such a good feeling to be able to support people through the court process towards positive outcomes.
Each day I learn something new. I now understand that things are never black and white. There are normally very complex reasons for someone being in court and many are trapped in a spiral of disadvantage, theft, addiction, domestic violence and homelessness. We always try and find a solution to the problems and get people to the right services. I had no idea there are so many incredible organisations out there.
I’m a firm believer that it is possible to make something of your life, whatever your background.
Volunteering improves self-awareness
This time with CASS+ has given me a chance to think about my values and beliefs. I love walking in the landscape and gazing at the night sky through my telescope. The world can be bright and magical. Each day, I remind myself and my daughter:
- You’re beautiful inside and out
- You should always believe in yourself
- You can achieve anything you put your mind to
At my graduation, we were told that we’re ‘the people who can change the world’ and I definitely aspire to this in my own way.
I’m now looking for a job that combines my law degree with helping others.
