Judy Hultgren, Chair of the Board of CASS+

Today, we said farewell to Judy, our Chair of the Board of Trustees. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time. She will be greatly missed.

Judy on board

Judy joined our Board of Trustees in February 2020. This was the first time that a serving magistrate had offered their support for our cause. Consequently, this was a milestone for CASS+.

It was clear that Judy was going to be a very active Trustee right from the start.

As a result, she swiftly progressed from Deputy Chair (in January 2021) to Chair, just a few weeks before her passing. We know that she was set to do great things for CASS+.

Doing what’s right

In recent years, our charity has grown and we’ve relied heavily on the expertise and knowledge of our Board.

This is where Judy really shone. She dedicated herself to a range of practical duties that we know took up swathes of her time: sub groups to address our management of risk, financial management and reporting; business development; quality standards; and, most recently, opening up our connections with Judges and HMCTS for our new work in the Family Courts in Devon and Cornwall. Most importantly, she enlisted most of our Board members from Cornwall. We are so very thankful for the way she worked tirelessly for this charity.

Strengths

Judy has always applied a no-nonsense approach. This was one of her great strengths. Over the last couple of weeks, her colleagues in the Justice System have expressed their admiration for her practical style.

Putting people first

Carole Edwards, CEO at CASS+ commented:

Judy believed that there was value and worth in everyone and each person’s story was valid and important, whoever they were.

The more I worked with Judy, the more I began to see her warmth. She was never averse to picking up the phone just to say ‘I’m here if you need me’. We will miss her moral support.

We’ve lost a true friend

Finally, saying goodbye to Judy makes it even harder knowing that she would have been a safe pair of hands for us going forward. Therefore, she will leave a huge gap. The CASS+ teams in Bodmin and Truro are already missing her popping in to their office between her sittings. We’ve lost a true friend and we will always remember her with fondness.
