Former fashion student Emily is all about making a difference
Emily Wood, Police Officer in training, has worked alongside our team in Truro for three days. We’re collaborating with Devon and Cornwall Police to help their new recruits gain inside knowledge about:
- What happens after an arrest
- The reasons why someone has committed an offence
- How they can be supported away from crime in the future
Dawn, Assistant Coordinator, shares on the importance of this collaboration
This is part of the government strategy to get police back on the streets. I do hope it continues – we’ve really enjoyed making this happen for the young officers. So far, we’ve had 10 new recruits seconded to our team at Truro Magistrates’ Court. Each cadet is getting a rounded experience of the criminal justice system over three days. They’re all stunned at how much support is on offer to the people who come through our door, from mental health to legal advice. I can see that each new recruit has been very carefully selected.
Emily confirms it was a tough selection process
Emily is determined to do everyone proud.
Her 22 weeks of training will set her up to become a police constable. She is very excited for this opportunity:
I did a fashion degree and I’ve come to realise that I’m a people-person and love learning new things. Policing is in my DNA – my Dad’s a Police Community Support Officer and he really inspired me to take this path.
I’ve learnt so much just being in court and meeting all the support services, like the anti-social behaviour team and witness services. One case will always remain with me:
We were able to help a very vulnerable gentleman. He arrived so anxious. He has been homeless and couldn’t afford his train fare to get to court. We explained this to the judge and secured a travel warrant for his journey home. Things are never black and white. I really enjoy creative problem-solving. It’s so good to be able to help in practical ways.
This has been a rich learning experience. I’m so looking forward to serving the community where I grew up.
