We’re celebrating the work of our first communications intern, Yousef. CASS+ is keen to support all young volunteers, interns and placements from social work, psychology, counselling, psychotherapy and criminology degrees. But this summer, we appointed a talented creative graduate through the Nottingham Trent University internship programme.
We haven’t looked back
Yousef worked remotely, completing ground-breaking work on our brand. All in all, he has brought our goal, mission, beliefs and values to life with an innovative set of graphics, especially a new logo (to be revealed, 2024).
Research is the key
We knew we needed to make our design accessible for our clients, carefully balanced with a sense of authority because we work with many different professionals.
Embracing the challenge
Yousef quickly understood the need for a refreshed colour palette that embodied empathy and compassion. Our new secondary palette with soft pastels relaxes and calms the mind.
Overcoming obstacles
When it comes to photography, we are restricted by safeguarding. On top of this, we need permission for any photography inside the courts. Yousef has found a solution with a stunning set of illustrations. Here’s a taster.
Lessons learned
Yousef shares five lessons from his internship:
Working with people who share my values
‘From start to finish, this experience has been nothing but positive. I must admit, I did have reservations. This is because I lacked experience in graphic design and I didn’t want to disappoint a charity with a purpose that resonated so deeply. However, that very message fuelled my determination to give my absolute best. I wanted to contribute to a cause that truly meant something to me.
Time to think
Before diving into any design, I conducted detailed research, aiming for designs that were not only aesthetically pleasing but also sensible and accessible. Consequently, we have a calm secondary palette that acts as a counterpart to the strength of the primary colours (orange, green, cream and blue). As shown here, we will have a set of illustrations with rounded, expressive shapes.
Understanding the brief
The creative brief eased my workload and allowed me to approach tasks accurately.
I referred to this brief at every opportunity and refrained from pursuing my own path.
A rewarding experience
I couldn’t have accomplished this alone. Tessa served as a motivating mentor throughout this journey. She recognised and encouraged my creative self, providing me space to express myself. All these factors boosted my confidence and drive to persist.
I’m proud of the end result. I know that this new brand will reflect the positivity CASS+ extends to everyone.
Regular communication and not being afraid to ask questions
We had regular check-ins to discuss ideas and concerns. As a result, I never found myself unsure and we made the most of the eight weeks. I learnt a lot and I could not be more grateful.’
Supporting Yousef into the future
Thanks to Nottingham Trent University employability team for making the perfect match. Yousef is an incredibly talented creative and we’re staying by his side whilst he finds his first job in the creative sector.
Our new brand 2024
We have our brand guidelines ready and we’re looking forward to celebrating Yousef’s beautiful and sensitive design in 2024.
Thank you, Yousef 😊.
